Möbius is originally from Cologne; now based in Berlin. Multi-instrumentalist and collaborator extraordinaire, most of his productions feature distinguished guests, Takashi Wada and F.S. Blumm among others. With three full-lengths to date,
Klisten (2002 Klangkrieg),
Dishoek (2005 Dekoder) and
Gebirge (2009 Karaoke Kalk), Möbius also runs Emphase Records and a publishing company, Autopilot Music Publishing.
Listeners who have come in contact with the music of Guido Möbius solely through his CDs are in for surprise when they attend one of the Berlin-based musician’s gigs. That is mainly due to the fact that Möbius makes no attempt whatsoever to translate the intimate sound of his albums into a live performance. On the contrary: With the help of no more than his guitar, a trumpet and a whole battery of serially connected effects, he creates a rather noisy live version of his music. With a twinkle in his eye, he creates coarse funk or piles up driving beats until they become walls of sounds. In these performances, Möbius' skill for melodies and his soft spot for polyrhythms come to the fore. Tightly organized arrangements alternate with passages of excessive improvisation. Every step in the creation of this music is public: When Möbius activates one of his effect pedals, the audience are a witness to this process. The creation of his music is nothing which is mysteriously conceived behind laptop screens. Möbius' music happens before his audiences' very eyes (and ears). This accounts for a large part of the fascination of his performances. The other (and by far greater part) results from the twist and turns his music takes and which never fails to surprise the audience. And last not least, the concerts of this one-man-band are pervaded by a delightful sense of humor.
