Drummer/noisemaker Shenggy (aka Shen Jing, 沈静) started playing in bands as a teenager and was with underground punkniks Hang on the Box (Sister Benten Online) for seven years before graduating to Beijing’s experimental noise scene in 2006. As one half of the duo White, Shenggy completed an album with partner Shou Wang under the tutelage of Einstürzende Neubauten’s Blixa Bargeld in 2007.
Shenggy started her music career in 1998 as a drummer for Beijing’s Hang on the Box when she was 16 years old. She was part of the band Tookoo from 2000 to May 2001, as a DJ, and after 2003 became more involved in the noise/experimental scene.
In 2006, after nearly eight years with her first band, Shenggy left the group to focus on new projects, one of which was a new unit, White, formed with Shou Wang of Car Sick Cars. White grew from an informal collaboration in the winter of 2005 at a place called Dos Kolegas, a small independently minded club on the outskirts of Beijing. Shenggy and Shou Wang took to the stage, unrehearsed, to make music together. What followed has become underground legend: “Working with a drum machine, an old analogue synth, a guitar, and a handful of pedals, they opened their improvisation by using the four-note Close Encounters theme as a jumping off point, and then proceeded to map a barbed and deeply psychedelic landscape that left the audience that night, including Beijing-based Blixa Bargeld, and indeed the duo themselves, completely floored.”
Blixa Bargeld extended his support to the pair, championing White with a support slot on Neubauten's 2008 European tour, and producing their self titled album in his Berlin studio. The self-titled White album produced in Berlin is to be released on the OpenNote label.
Shenggy’s music was featured on a compilation album put together by French net-label eDogm in 2006. Two Shenggy tracks were included, 'First Noise' and 'Long Sound', as well as a live piece from White, 'First Live (At The 13Club)'.
Since early 2007, Shenggy has been based in London studying philosophy and art. She is also currently working on a solo performance art project that is focused on using only her voice, a Korg MS-20 synth, a tape recorder and a handful of samples.
