Marc Teissier du Cros graduated from high school in Versailles, and spent his spare time listening to music and going to gigs with friends, some of whom went on to become successful musicians (among them, the two members of Air), designers, film and video makers. From 1988 until 1993 he studied German and Economics with a specialization in Marketing at the University of Paris X. In 1993 he entered the music business and became a trainee for four months at the marketing department of Virgin France. In 1995, he joined the A&R department of the newly founded Virgin France sub-label Source. Source was a young artists’ label which released various styles of music including local soul, ragga, pop, and hiphop, and distributed the output of the two cutting-edge UK labels, Mo’Wax and Warp..
Source earned its international reputation by pioneering the growth of the French electronic scene. The compilation series Source Lab (3 volumes), which du Cros was responsible for as an A&R, featured newcomers Air, Daft Punk, Cassius, Etienne de Crécy, and Alex Gopher. The next compilation, Source Rocks, was based on a mutation of this scene to a more organic sound. During the work on the compilation du Cross discovered the band Phoenix.
By the year 2000, du Cros was the head of A&R at Source but decided to leave the company and start his own label, Record Makers, together with business partner Stephane Elfassi. From the beginning, the intention with Record Makers was to explore the new romantic electro-pop scene, and keep develop new French talent.
