Gabriele Klein is Professor of Sociology and Psychology for Movement, Sport and Dance in the department Bewegungswissenschaft (Movement Studies) as well as the head of the department Kultur, Medien und Gesellschaft (Culture, Media and Society) at the University of Hamburg. She studied Social Sciences, History, Sports Science, Contemporary Dance and Pedagogy at the universities Bielefeld, Bochum and Essen as well as the Amsterdam School of the Arts. She qualified as a Professor on the theme of “Pop Culture. Kulturproduktion und kulturelle Praxis. Eine Studie am Beispiel Techno/ Pop Culture, Cultural Production and Cultural Practice. A study based on the example of techno”. She worked as a Visiting Lecturer and Professor at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum and other institutions and also at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst “Mozarteum” in Salzburg/ Austria, Universität Bern/ Switzerland, UCLA/ USA and the Smith-College/ USA. Since 1994 she has been responsible for diverse research projects and has organized numerous national and international academic events. Between 1997 and 2001 she was on the Board of Directors at the
Gesellschaft für Tanzforschung (Society for Dance Research).
Main focus of research: Body, Movement and Dance research as well as Pop Culture research, Performance Studies, Gender Studies and Urban Research.
