Andy Stott (b. 1979) has done a lot to push Manchester based Modern Love to the forefront of bass heavy techno over the last two years with his subtle but powerful approach. His music seamlessly spans the dub-tech divide, bringing a complex and idiosyncratic signature style to productions that are impossible to pigeonhole. Influenced by the classic producers like Carl Craig and Basic Channel, he draws too from early IDM and plumbs the depths of UK dub for deep bass and melancholy backdrops. Stott also incorporates treated piano and a myriad other style snippets. In only two years, Stott has risen to the forefront of bass heavy techno with his subtle but powerful approach.
 
Manchester based Stott became interested in music as a child and was obsessed with hardcore as a young teenager. His interest slowly shifted to techno and early electronic music, and at 15, after Mark Stewart (Claro Intelecto) introduced him to Aphex Twin’s Metapharstic, he was converted and decided music was his calling. Stott immediately enrolled in piano lessons and bought a Roland-10.
 
Stott debuted on Modern Love in 2005 with Replace, a deep, dancefloor friendly 12”. Replace was followed just a few months later by Ceramics, the first in a six part series of singles that also included contributions from Pendle Coven and Claro Intelecto.
 
The BBC’s Mary Anne Hobbs quickly picked up and championed Stott, granting him a full 40-minute slot on her show The Breezeblock soon after the release of Replace. After the release of Ceramics, a tough track that many have noted was indebted to both Basic Channel and Dave Clarke’s early Red series, Andy Stott became one of a select few to be invited back to complete a second session for the show.
 
Though he’s only been making music for two years, and still holds down a day job as a Mercedes car painter, Stott is a prolific producer and has accrued a vast catalogue of tracks. His 2006 debut album Merciless was apparently culled from over a hundred pieces of music.
