Born in Oslo, the artist and designer was being a computer-geek since the age of eleven. His work is concerned with the algorithmic generation of form, whether still, animated or interactive. Watz’ signature style is a particular brand of visual hedonism, marked by playful organic shapes and a "more is more" attitude. He has used the nom-de-guerre Amoeba since 1995 for experimentation in electronic media, with the web site www.evolution.com as the output. He then started focussing the concept of time-based drawing machines, as well as visual performances for music.
In 2005 Watz started Generator.x, a platform for generative art and design which so far has resulted in a conference, a blog, a travelling exhibition and concert tour. The exhibition is currently touring until 2007. A concert tour of Norway with generative sound and visuals took place in April 2006, organized by the National Touring Concerts.
Watz is very busy travelling around to present his work. In 2006 he was seen at the OFFF Festival in Barcelona, at Paysages Électroniques in Lille and at the AV Festival in Newcastle, to mention just some major performances.
Watz currently lives in Berlin. His tools of choice are Java, Processing, VVVV and Flash. He continues to edit the Generator.x blog and prepare future Generator.x events, as well as teach workshops in computational design and generative art.
